Case Study: White City Imperial College

Date 21 Aug 2024

Carver Engineering is proud to announce the successful completion of our overbridge fabrication project at White City – Imperial College for our client Careys

The project, which was completed as scheduled in May 2024, involved the fabrication of steel beams that form the backbone of the new road and pedestrian access infrastructure. These beams are a central component of the campus’s expansive infrastructure delivery plan, due for full completion by May 2025.

Why Carver Engineering Was Chosen for the Overbridge Fabrication Project

bridge fabrication project taking place at white city imperial collegeCarver Engineering was selected for this project due to the strength of our tender submission and our proactive involvement with the client during the tendering process. While our bid was not the lowest, our detailed and comprehensive approach provided confidence in our ability to deliver a high-quality result.

Our extensive experience in road bridge fabrication was another key factor in our selection. Over the years, we have successfully completed numerous similar projects, each one enhancing our reputation for excellence and reliability in the field. This experience enabled us to approach the White City bridge project with the expertise and confidence necessary to meet the client’s high standards.

Carver’s just-in-time delivery of the fabricated steel bridge components ensured that our client, and the infrastructure delivery plan’s principal contractor, Careys, were able to install each part in a timely manner to keep to the agreed delivery date with minimal disruption to the campus.

White City Imperial College Overbridge: Project Overview

Fabrication commenced in late December 2023 with works taking place during possession working hours and over 60% of the works completed off-site at our state-of-the-art facility in Doncaster.

Our scope of work included the preparation of detailed fabrication drawings, which served as the blueprint for the precise construction of the bridge components. We then undertook the fabrication and trial erection of approximately 225 tonnes of structural steelwork, including managing the installation of eight braced plate girders, secondary steelwork, and utilities.

Protective coatings were applied to all steel components to enhance durability and ensure long-term resilience against the elements. Additionally, we were responsible for the installation of bearings and coordinated the movement order logistics, ensuring that all materials were delivered to the site efficiently. The project also involved craneage operations to position the large steel elements accurately.

Each Braced Pair (pictured leaving our facility, above) was delivered in modular sections using just in time deliveries to minimise the impact on railway infrastructure.

Enhancing Connectivity and Accessibility

The new overbridge plays a pivotal role in the significant improvement of the White City campus’s overall infrastructure. The bridge will offer a direct and efficient link to Wood Lane, simplifying the journey for both pedestrians and vehicles. The replacement of the Depot Road bridge with this new structure is expected to yield several key benefits:

  1. Improved Connectivity: The bridge will better integrate the White City campus with the surrounding locality, making it easier for students, staff, and visitors to move between different parts of the campus and the nearby area.
  2. Safer Access: With the incorporation of segregated pathways, the bridge will provide safer routes for pedestrians and cyclists, reducing the risk of accidents and making the campus more accessible to all. Additionally, the new design ensures a smoother flow of vehicular traffic, contributing to an overall safer environment.
  3. A Greener and More Attractive Entrance: The bridge will also contribute to a more welcoming and aesthetically pleasing entrance to the campus from Wood Lane. The design incorporates green spaces and landscaping that not only enhance the visual appeal of the campus but also promote sustainability by improving the local environment.
